The Data Platform team is a tight group of technologists and data scientists whose mission is to spread insight, information, and data driven solutions throughout the organization. We have complex data pipelines, large macroeconomic and market-based data sets, as well as our proprietary in-house data to develop with.

Role Description

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Data Architect to join our growing team. You will be responsible for analyzing and defining data requirements, creating data models, and designing database structures. You will also collaborate with data engineers, business intelligence analysts, data scientists and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of data solutions. Additionally, you will play a key role in optimizing data storage and retrieval processes to improve system performance.

The ideal candidate for this role has a strong background in data management, excellent problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of database technologies. You should have experience designing complex data systems and a track record of delivering high-quality, scalable solutions.

Please note that this job position entails in-person office requirements for a minimum of 3 days per week: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, located at Essex's corporate offices in Irvine, Woodland Hills, San Mateo, and Bellevue.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the organization's data architecture strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze business requirements and translate them into data architecture solutions.
  • Design and implement scalable and reliable data models, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
  • Define and enforce data management standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee data governance initiatives and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations.
  • Work closely with data engineers to optimize data storage and retrieval processes.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, ensuring efficient query execution and data processing.
  • Provide guidance and support in data analysis, database design, and performance tuning.
  • Conduct research on emerging technologies and industry best practices, making recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and maintain the performance of data systems.
  • Ensure data integrity and security.
  • Document data architecture and processes.

Qualification and Work Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, hard science, economics, or relevant field.
  • 10+ years of demonstrable professional experience.
  • 4+ years of proven experience as a Data Architect or similar role.
  • 4+ years of experience working with business and technical stakeholders.
  • Proven experience of building and leading a data engineering team.
  • Must have technical leadership experience in an existing role.
  • In-depth knowledge of database technologies, such as SQL, NoSQL, and data warehousing.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling and database design principles.
  • Familiarity with data integration and ETL processes such as dbt, Matillion, Fivetran or Talend.
  • Scripting knowledge in Python, JavaScript, PowerShell, or other languages.
  • Experience with Azure SQL, Snowflake, BigQuery or other similar cloud databases.
  • Exposure to visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau or Looker.
  • Familiarity with orchestration platforms such as Airflow or Dagster is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP) a plus.
  • Practical knowledge of DevOps best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Prior multi-family real estate experience a plus.
  • Good meme selection and desire to have fun.

The salary range for this position is $148,000.00 - $237,000.00 per year. New hires generally start between $148,000.00 - $193,000.00 per year. The final salary offer will be determined after reviewing relevant factors, including but not limited to skill sets; relevant experience; internal equity; and other business and organizational needs.

This role is also eligible to participate in Essex’s discretionary Annual Bonus program that is commensurate with the level of the position.
