Desktop Support Specialist

BASIC PURPOSE:

Provides technical assistance to computer system users. Answers questions or resolves computer problems for clients in person or via telephone if from remote locations. Provides assistance concerning the use of computer hardware and software, including printing, installation, word processing, electronic mail and operating systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintains and repairs equipment by tracing and diagnosing malfunctions, trouble shooting, repairing or replacing components, adjusting settings and testing equipment and communications hardware and networks for satisfactory operation.

2. Configures and installs computer, peripheral and network equipment such as terminals, keyboards, printers, desktop computers and communications equipment, installs software.

3. Reviews computer operations instructions and computer error codes to debug programs, interpret machine stops or other inoperable situations and corrections to complex error conditions.

4. Uses electronic and computer test equipment, tools, supplies and materials.

5. Confers with senior management in the resolution of procedural or technical matters.

6. Provides technical support to staff in the use of computer systems.

7. Assists staff in understanding operation of computer, peripheral and network equipment.

8. Complies with work schedule and attendance requirements according to reasonable policy and practices.

9. Reads trade magazines and attends computer trade shows to obtain current
