The Sr. Director of Procurement & Sourcing is responsible for driving strategic sourcing activity, implementing procurement processes/tools, developing the team’s resources, and tracking value for Essex’s managed spend. The leader of the function builds and fosters key senior level relationships, develops/coaches a small team of sourcing & procurement professionals, challenges business processes tactfully, and delivers value to Essex’s bottom line. The Sr. Director also works internally to ensure that savings identified become savings achieved.

Please note that this job position entails in-person office requirements for a minimum of 3 days per week: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, located at Essex's corporate offices in Irvine, Woodland Hills, San Mateo, and Bellevue.

Key Strategic Accountabilities

  • Sets overall sourcing & procurement strategy and drives overall sourcing activity
  • Works with business partners across functions to break down barriers and identify opportunities for process improvement, cost containment/avoidance, and capital investment
  • Manages and updates central sourcing calendar and aligns with functions/communities to populate and maintain
  • Leads the procurement governance activity and contributes to control programs that comply with corporate policies
  • Facilitates the procurement program (policies, procedures, tools, preferred supplier programs, etc.) against which the internal departments execute procurement activities
  • Works with internal stakeholders to bring more managed spend to the Sourcing & Procurement team
  • Establishes and executes procedures for driving sourcing & procurement value in the pre- and post-acquisition process
  • Directs internal team resources toward meeting strategic objectives Functional
  • Assesses complex information (market trends, competitor analysis, community data) and links internal stakeholders to influence business strategy
  • Reviews business cases to quantify savings/benefits of new initiatives
  • Acts as an Essex ambassador in building and maintaining sustainable relationships across functions and departments
  • Conducts vendor negotiations, reviews contracts, and works with Legal on contract management and review process
  • Develops strong partnerships with current and potential suppliers
  • Oversees spend analytics (i.e. Spend Cube) and the sourcing process for the products/services required by the business
  • Works with Finance to establish preferred payment terms, and corresponds with suppliers to incorporate them; works with Accounts Payable to ensure terms are adhered to
  • Works with Finance regularly to update budgets based on expected savings from sourcing &procurement activity - Monitors Preferred Suppliers’ performance
  • Works with functions/communities to implement efficiencies to procurement processes and support the execution of procurement activities (ordering, receipt, use, etc.) done by those functions People
  • Manages team resources and is accountable for the overall engagement, productivity, turnover and bench strength of the team
  • Ensures all team members are provided with clear performance objectives that are aligned with Essex goals
  • Works in a collaborative and constructive manner with cross functional partners
  • Understands/demonstrates in a manner that promotes, and is aligned with, Essex's Mission, Vision, Beliefs
  • Works with Finance and the Communities to update budgets and ensure savings is captured

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university (preferably in Supply Chain, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Business Management)
  • MBA or other advanced degree preferable but not required
  • Minimum 8-10 years experience in project management, procurement, REIT operations, or consulting;
  • Deep background in Strategic Sourcing (wide variety of categories) and procurement processes/efficiencies
  • Experience managing a team of procurement professionals
  • Proven ability to work across an enterprise and service internal clients
  • Strong analytical skills and technical knowledge
  • Strong interpersonal, client facing and team management skills
  • Senior level relationship building and presentation skills.
  • Able to work in a professional, fast-paced environment with shifting priorities

The salary range for this position is $148,000.00 - $237,000.00 per year. New hires generally start between $148,000.00 - $193,000.00 per year. The final salary offer will be determined after reviewing relevant factors, including but not limited to skill sets; relevant experience; internal equity; and other business and organizational needs.

This role is also eligible to participate in Essex’s discretionary Annual Bonus program that is commensurate with the level of the position.
