Safety Specialist

San Diego, CA

Job Summary

As a critical member of the Risk Management team, this role will have accountability for identifying, supporting and administering ConAm’s comprehensive safety program. This role will conduct investigations and audits, assist in developing safety training programs, administer insured Worker’s Compensation claims and effectively communicate and consult with all levels of the organization.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State and local safety laws, regulations, codes ….etc.
  • Personally, conduct or coordinate with a third party, onsite inspections to identify and mitigate hazards to Property, Associates and Visitors.
  • Monitor and analyze incident and claim data to identify trends and develop recommendations.
  • Administer insured Workers Compensation claims.
  • Conduct accident and workplace safety investigations and make corrective recommendations.
  • Coordinate and record the resolution of corrective actions resulting from inspections and accident investigations.
  • Coordinate with the Human Resource Department on all Workers’ Compensation claims.
  • Assist in developing, implementing and administering Safety Programs, Program Documents and Training.
  • Coordinate ergonomic evaluations.
  • Establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with managers, supervisors, associates, vendors and others encountered in the course of the work.
  • Maintain ConAm’s Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA) records for Federal and State regulatory compliance.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Complete accident and workplace safety investigations within 3 business days of an incident.
  • Communicate inspection and investigation corrective recommendations within 10 days; coordinate with regions and record resolutions within 30 days of incident/visit.
  • Annually review Safety Program Documents and revise as needed.
  • Monitor safety training completion status and report results on a quarterly basis.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Degree from a four-year college or university with major course work in occupational health studies, environmental studies or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Two years of increasingly responsible experience in occupational health and safety programs, including conducting accident or safety investigations or designing and conducting employee safety training programs.
  • Current valid CPR Red Cross Instructor and Advanced First Aid certificates must be obtained within first year and maintained on a continuing basis.
  • Professional certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications.

Skills

  • A current, valid California Class C driver's license.
  • Must possess a thorough understanding with the ability to explain, interpret and apply complex Federal and State requirements regulating work place health and safety and the use, storage and disposal of chemical and hazardous substances.
  • Ability to evaluate work place safety programs and practices and make sound recommendations for improvement.
  • Ability to conduct accident and workplace safety investigations.
  • Ability to conduct effective employee safety training programs.
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and initiative within policy guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, logically and persuasively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive investigative reports and other materials.
  • Ability to travel to any ConAm location as needed.

Working Conditions

  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels (i.e. office equipment, light traffic).
  • May be exposed to humidity, intense heat and cold, outdoor weather conditions, and fumes.

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, works with fingers and perceives attributes of objects and materials.
  • Involves moderate physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a primarily administrative nature.
