We are currently searching for a Director of Energy Management to be based in our Arlington, VA corporate headquarters.
The Role
In this unique and high profile position, you will play a crucial role in AvalonBay’s overall Energy Management Strategy including managing AvalonBay’s energy budgets and spend, energy procurement, and resident reimbursement programs. This includes:
- Developing and managing comprehensive energy budgets and monitoring and reporting on actual performance relative to budget. Reforecasting energy spend throughout the year and monitoring and reporting on actual performance relative to reforecast.
- Managing resident billing programs and supervising program managers who are responsible for implementing new, and supporting ongoing, resident billing programs. Maximizing resident reimbursements while ensuring billing programs are legally compliant.
- Partnering with Corporate Responsibility to implement sustainability initiatives such as demand response, solar, battery storage and water savings initiatives to reduce utilities expense and mitigate negative environmental impact.
- Developing programs to engage our onsite associates in understanding their community utility consumption, detect anomalies, and drive better energy and water management.
- Measuring and verifying the cost savings achieved via sustainability initiatives.
- Managing energy procurement for the portfolio.
- Preparing periodic reporting of AvalonBay’s actual and expected utilities expense and communicating performance to senior management.
- Ensuring compliance with external City benchmarking reporting requirements and supporting Corporate Responsibility reporting.
You Have...
To join our innovative energy management team, you must possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in business management, finance, accounting or field related to energy, sustainability or environmental policy.
- At least 8 years of relevant experience including financial analysis, budgeting, utilities expense management; preferably in the multi-family real estate industry.
- Prior management experience required with proven leadership, coaching, and collaboration success.
- Expert analytical capabilities including expert-level Excel skills.
- The ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
- Accounting knowledge a plus.
- The ability to build relationships and work collaboratively at all levels of the organization as demonstrated in a prior work environment.
