We currently own and operate approximately 80,000 apartment homes in the US and employ approximately 3,000 associates. We are seeking an Enterprise Architect to join our Arlington, VA IT Department.

The Role

We’re looking for a team member who is passionate about working cross-functionally with business and IT teams to deliver continuous improvement in capabilities, processes, and technology. The Enterprise Architect helps the organization achieve its objectives by enabling the delivery of business capabilities and stewarding technology resources to their most efficient and effective use. The Enterprise Architect builds and maintains IT roadmaps aligned to business strategy, and establishes architectural standards to minimize complexity of the technical portfolio. They also help improve integration quality, support innovation, and enable enterprise productivity and collaboration. Working closely with the business, the Enterprise Architect will ensure that the systems and solutions in use at AvalonBay are aligned to help the business achieve its goals, and that the organization is getting the best value from these solutions.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Builds the long-term strategic roadmap for all IT systems architecture
  • Aligns IT strategy and planning with the company’s business goals and objectives
  • Seamlessly integrates business and service strategy into enterprise architecture roadmap
  • Partners with business and technology subject-matter experts to elicit and translate business requirements into technological solutions
  • Leads the design and modeling of technical architectures for delivery, development, and support of projects
  • Guides solution architects to provide scalable and adaptable architectural solutions
  • Develops and maintains policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure that a consistent framework is applied across the company
  • Promotes the use of a shared infrastructure and application roadmap to reduce costs and improve how information is flows
  • Ensures enterprise data is structured for ease of use
  • Manages and facilitates a review board to evaluate project proposals for architectural fit
  • Circulates roadmaps to align IT priorities with business partner needs
  • Provides data architecture expertise to major enterprise projects
  • Ensure that solutions are cost effective, do not duplicate functionality nor diverge from planned future state architecture.
  • Ensure solutions are risk averse and in alignment with current standards and security policies.
  • Participates in the design and implementation of IT Service Management standards, tools and methodologies.

You Have...

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent with 7-10 years experience in a mid-size IT organization.
  • Certification in two or more of the following: ITIL, Agile, Microsoft (MCSE, MCSD, MCT), VMWare (VCP, VCAP, VCIX, VCDX) or Cisco (CCNA, CCNP, CCIE) technologies highly desired.
  • Experience as a technical lead for a major technology implementation required.
  • Experience building enterprise architecture roadmaps.
  • Experience designing, integrating, and managing complex infrastructure solutions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of hardware, software, application, and systems engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience with business process and performance modeling, benchmarking, and financial analysis.

In addition, the ideal candidate will have the ability to “think big” and challenge conventional wisdom regarding technology hype, possess strong leadership and negotiation skills with business and technical groups, excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong project management and organization skills, demonstrated ability to build consensus among many stakeholders.
